Derek Brunson scored a huge knockout win over Lyoto Machida in the main event of UFC Fight Night 119 in Sao Paulo on Saturday. The fight was stopped in the first round after the two circled each other for the first couple minutes.
Machida landed a nice shot and was swarming in when Brunson connected with a huge left haymaker out of nowhere and Machida was dazed. Brunson moved in, sent Machida to the ground and landed a few shots before the referee stopped the fight.
Brunson has now won his last two bouts by first-round knockout, a good turnaround since he lost two straight to Robert Whitaker and Anderson Silva in his previous two fights.
In the co-main event, Colby Convington thoroughly dominated Demian Maia in their three-round fight. Maia may have taken the first round with effective striking, but he was unable to secure a takedown in the second or third rounds, and Covington started to dominate. By the end of the third, Covington was on top and laying down damaging ground and pound.
Covington talked a lot of trash about Maia, Brazil and Tyron Woodley prior to the fight, and he at the very least managed to back it up on Saturday.
The highlights on the undercard included a nice d’arce choke submission from Vicente Luque on Niko Price in the final bout before the main card and Hacran Dias being upset by Jared Gordon earlier on the card.
In the first fight on the main card, John Lineker beat Marlon Vera via unanimous decision. Then, Thiago Santos just barely beat the bell by scoring a TKO victory over Jack Hermansson at 4:59 of the first round.
Fan favorite and longtime veteran Jim Miller wasn’t victorious in Brazil, losing a three-round decision to Francisco
Trinaldo. All three judges went with Trinaldo, 29-28, though it was a competitive bout. Following that, Pedro Munhoz took down Rob Font, securing a guillotine choke in the first round.
